Speech and Language Therapy Service for Multilingual Children: Attitudes and Approaches across Four European Countries

Educational equality and the reduction of discrimination are among UN’s Sustainability Goals. Previous studies as well policy recommendations suggest that extent to which these implemented in field speech language therapy for multilingual children depends on sufficient knowledge material. To this end, an online survey was carried out with 300 Speech Language Therapists (SLTs) from Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, investigating their attitudes approaches regarding service provision children. Their responses were analyzed taking SLTs’ background, experience, country origin into account. Results interpreted context country-specific SLT service-related policies training migration history. There seems be a gap between about specific requirements providing Therapy (SLT) common practice, which—despite continuous need further training—points awareness but lack materials or resources. We found experience working most influential factor towards multilingualism. This suggests importance improving pre-exam early-career professional foster development mindful appropriate multilingualism clinical practice.
